A marsh hawk coming zooming up from the valley below, executes a perfect hairpin turn, then vanishes. I don't even try reaching for my camera, knowing there are some moments in life that cannot be photographed.

The word "Paleoptera" means "ancient wings." Ancient they may be, but backwards they are not. This group includes the dragonflies, the fastest flying insects, with top speeds in excess of 35 miles an hour. A dragonfly can fly forwards, backwards, side to side, up and down vertically, and can hover in the air for up to a minute.

The Small Girl is sixteen years old. Polio has left her with a paralyzed arm and a limp. One eye wanders, and she slurs her words, as if talking with a mouthful of mush. Her name is Ayeshetu, her nicknames is Ama, but I usually just call her the Small Girl.
